Promise Forti, a senior at the Kelley School of Business, will address her fellow graduates as the student speaker at Indiana University Bloomington's Winter Commencement on December 20. Reflecting on her journey, Forti plans to encourage graduates to embrace the unknown.

Forti's path to higher education was not always clear. "I feel like I have been able to take advantage of every single opportunity that this school has given me," said Forti, who studied economic consulting, public policy, and international business. "Being at this school has completely changed my life."

The commencement ceremonies will be held at IU Auditorium with two sessions scheduled for 9 a.m. and noon.

Originally from St. Joe, Indiana, Forti is graduating in just three and a half years. During her time at IU, she engaged with the Boys and Girls Club of Ellettsville through the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning. She also taught economics courses as an undergraduate instructor and served as a teaching assistant in non-market risk consulting.

Forti took part in Kelley Student Government as assistant director of ethics and social responsibility. Additionally, she participated in a study abroad program at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

Her initial interest in college sparked during a visit to IU Bloomington when she was 16 years old. A year later, attending college became a strong desire for Forti, leading her to choose the Kelley School of Business after being awarded the full-tuition Cox Scholarship.

Despite challenges during her freshman year—failing her first economics exam—Forti persevered with help from Professor Paul Graf. Her efforts paid off with high grades and encouragement from faculty members like John Maxwell who recognized her potential.

Maxwell noted Forti's role model qualities: "I see Promise as a very good role model for any student at Indiana University."

Forti applied to be the commencement speaker to express gratitude for her educational opportunities and inspire others with her story. She recently accepted a position with MasterCard as a franchise analyst while planning her upcoming wedding in Glasgow next May.

"It is within our power to go and make a difference in the world," wrote Forti in her application essay for student speaker. "I will carry the spirit of IU with me."
