Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington has been awarded the 2023 Tyler's Excellence Award for Data & Transparency for its updated data portal and new dashboards at data.bloomington.in.gov. The Data & Transparency award “recognizes organizations that have used Tyler solutions to creatively and transparently communicate valuable data to their communities and used those insights to make data-driven decisions.”
At the May Tyler Connect conference, the City of Bloomington’s Open Data Portal was commended with Excellence Awards for:
- Improving the City's ability to quickly share information with the public for the purposes of informing and providing transparency
- Empowering public users to create visualizations and enabling the City to use those visualizations for a deeper understanding of trends
- Eliminating the need for staff to manually publish data to the public through live data feeds from their enterprise systems to Data & Insights, creating a more informed public
Further, Tyler announced, “By implementing Tyler’s Data & Insights solutions, the City of Bloomington has been able to automate data extraction and publishing from the City’s data systems and provide real-time access to the City’s Geographic Information System data services.”
The portal was developed by the City of Bloomington Information & Technology Services Department to increase the transparency of city data while reducing the amount of effort required by city staff to compile and publish the data for public use.
“Transparent access to public information and City services allows residents to access services and receive information in a barrier-free way,” said Mayor John Hamilton. “This recognition from Tyler is well-earned by ITS staff, and I encourage residents to explore these wonderful resources.”
By implementing Tyler’s Data & Insights (Formerly Socrata) portal, the City has been able to automate data extraction and publishing from the City’s data systems and also provide real-time access to the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) data services. The portal allows non-City staff to access and create visualizations, which has enabled non-city users and collaborators, such as Indiana University faculty and students, to create and publish visualizations of city data within the data portal and automatically access the most current data.
“The City of Bloomington ITS team is honored to be recognized for this work,” said Bloomington ITS Director Rick Dietz. “The creative and innovative ITS data team deserves our thanks for continually prioritizing transparency, access, and innovation in pursuit of improving our data and digital services.”
