Grenadiers Sweep St. Mary-Of-The-Woods In Thursday Doubleheader

The IU Southeast softball team swept St. Mary-of-the-Woods in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Grenadiers won game one 11-3 in five innings and game two 5-4 in a traditional seven inning game.

The Grenadiers scored first in game one. Savannah Gaither scored on a wild pitch to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead. Kendall Brown stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing Erin Templeman to score. Macie Zink singled to center to score Brown, giving IU Southeast a 3-0 advantage.

IU Southeast took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a single by Autumn Oehlstrom, scoring Savannah Gaither. Cassi Roman drew a bases loaded walk to extend the Grenadier lead to 5-0. Macie Zink was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving IU Southeast a 6-0 edge.

SMWC got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single. Another single drove in two runs, cutting the IU Southeast lead in half at 6-3.

Issy Wright tripled to left center in the bottom of the fifth to give the Grenadiers an 8-3 lead. Savannah Gaither singled, scoring Issy Wright and extending the IU Southeast lead to 9-3.

Erin Templeman doubled down the left field line, scoring two more Grenadier runs to make it 10-3. Kendall Brown followed with a single to left, giving IU Southeast an eight-run lead and an 11-3 run-rule win in five innings.

Madison Wathan picked up the win for IU Southeast, pitching all five innings in the contest. Savannah Gaither, Autumn Oehlstrom, Kendall Brown, Macie Zink and Issy Wright all had two hits for the Grenadiers. Seven different Grenadiers drove in a run.

SMWC scored first in game two. The Pomeroys scored three runs in the top of the first, forcing IU Southeast to change pitchers in the opening inning. A wild pitch in the top of the second gave SMWC a 4-0 lead.

Cassi Roman singled through the left side in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Erin Templeman to cut the SMWC lead to 4-1. Macie Zink drove in a run on a fielder's choice, cutting the Pomeroy lead in half at 4-2.

SMWC threatened in the top of the fourth. A single and a stolen base put a runner on second. A single to right field followed, but Autumn Oehlstrom threw the runner out at the plate to prevent the Pomeroys from adding to their lead.

The Grenadiers used the momentum from the top of the inning to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Hoggatt led off with a double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Hoggatt scored on a bunt by Issy Wright, narrowly avoiding the tag at the plate to bring IU Southeast within one run at 4-3.

IU Southeast took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kendall Brown led off with a single up the middle. Cassi Roman followed with a single of her own. After a double steal, Brynlea Bennett delivered a single to right field to drive in two runs.

IU Southeast would go on to win game two 5-4 to sweep the doubleheader. Hannah Nunemaker picked up the win, throwing 6.2 innings of four-hit, one-run baseball in relief. Cassi Roman had two hits in the contest. Brynlea Bennett led IU Southeast with two RBIs.

The Grenadiers move to 9-7 on the year and 2-0 in RSC play. The softball team returns to action on Wednesday at Alice Lloyd.
