The YWCA of McLean County was established in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1908. It has served the needs of children, women, families, and senior citizens in the community for more than 100 years. The organization provides a variety of programs and service offerings that benefit people from the age of six weeks of age to the end of life.
The original goal of the YWCA of McLean County was to assist working women with day-to-day tasks, babysitting services, and recreation. The organization eventually began providing assistance to unemployed women and teens in the 1940s. It offered training classes so McLean County teachers could teach physical education to female students. The organization began offering classes to women on all aspects of life in the 1950s.
"YWCA USA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities," the organization's website noted. "We are one of the oldest and largest women's organizations in the nation, serving more than two million women, girls, and their families.
"YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 150 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, we combine programming and advocacy in order to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls."
