IMU will Light Up the Night
The Indiana Memorial Union is hosting its annual Light Up the Night event beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the IMU circle drive.
The event will include a countdown to lighting the candles on the east and west towers of the IMU, plus live performances and short remarks by student leaders. This year boasts something new: an outdoor skating rink at Robel Plaza, across the street from the IMU circle drive, and a winter market with vendors selling gifts and other items until 9 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff as well as the surrounding Bloomington community are invited to attend the event to kick off the holiday season.
“The addition of the winter market gives the IU and Bloomington community a way to support local artists while enjoying a hot chocolate or glass of wassail, and the IMU will even have their special IMU snow globes for sale,” said Teresa Weimann, associate director of student involvement and leadership for the IMU. “I really hope this is an event that both the IU and Bloomington communities can come together and enjoy.”
The candle tradition has been going on for over 50 years, but the lighting event itself is only a few years old.
The iconic candle on the Biddle Hotel stands at 80 feet tall, with around 150 red bulbs and 33 white bulbs. The smaller candle is 60 feet tall, with 88 red bulbs and 34 white bulbs. The candles remain lit through New Year’s Day.
