Grenadiers Fall To Oakland City 83-76
The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to Oakland City 83-76 in an RSC game on Saturday.
The Grenadiers jumped out to a 5-4 first quarter lead following an Abby Young three. A 5-0 Oakland City run put the Mighty Oaks ahead 9-5. Leading 11-8, Oakland City used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 10 at 18-8. Two free throws gave the Mighty Oaks a 23-11 lead later in the quarter. IU Southeast scored six straight to narrow the lead to 23-17. Oakland City led 25-17 after the first quarter.
Oakland City scored the first six points of the second quarter, extending their lead to 31-17. Back-to-back IU Southeast threes by Young and Lauren Lambdin cut the deficit to 31-23. The Grenadiers were able to cut the Oakland City lead to seven, but the Mighty Oaks scored six straight points to take a 41-28 lead into the half.
The third quarter saw Oakland City extend their lead to 15 at 49-34. IU Southeast used back-to-back threes to narrow the deficit to 49-40. The last three baskets of the quarter for the Grenadiers were three pointers, but Oakland City held a 64-55 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
IU Southeast hit four threes to open the fourth quarter, cutting the Oakland City lead to 71-67 with 5:38 remaining as Brynna Blackburn, Leah Miller and a pair from Lambdin cut into the deficit. With a 73-69 advantage, Oakland City scored six straight points to extend their lead to ten at 79-69.
A 5-0 run by IU Southeast cut the lead to five at 79-74 with 53 seconds remaining. Two free throws made it 81-74 Oakland City. A Meredith Weiss basket cut the Grenadier deficit to five, but two more free throws by Oakland City iced the game. The Mighty Oaks prevailed over IU Southeast 83-76.
Lauren Lambdin led the Grenadiers with 23 points. Meredith Weiss finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Sierra Graham added nine points and six rebounds, and Brynna Blackburn added nine points off the bench. Emmy Ralph led the Grenadiers with seven assists. Freshman Abby Young started for IU Southeast for the first time, scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds.
IU Southeast falls to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on November 29th at home against St-Mary-of-the-Woods.
