Alternative ride options abound for campus, city

Did you know you can use an online carpool tool to find and offer rides to your holiday destination? Or rent a car for a few hours or a day to get around campus, Bloomington and beyond? Or choose from a variety of other transportation options to navigate the city?

For those looking to save money or think environmentally, Hoosier Rideboard, Zipcar and Go Bloomington offer convenient means for getting from one location to another.

Hoosier Rideboard, for IU staff, faculty and students, is a free online tool where users can find ride matches. Sign up, set up your profile, and either post a trip date and destination or search for a date and destination that match your needs. Drivers and riders can then contact each other and work out trip details.

Zipcar is available to drivers 18 and older, including international drivers. People can reserve a car online or with their mobile device, access a car anytime, rent it daily or hourly, and return it on campus. Gas and insurance are included in the cost, and Zipcars can be picked up at four campus locations and two off-campus locations.

Go Bloomington is a resource to help people looking for better transportation options, whether that’s biking or walking, the campus or city bus services, carpools or vanpools, or e-scooters. The tool helps users choose the best option and plan their routes.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, Campus Bus Service will have an altered schedule. It will operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20, 21, 22, 23 and 26. Riders can track the buses in real time with the IU Mobile app. No service will be provided Nov. 24 and 25. Regular hours will resume Nov. 27.
