Grenadiers Fall to Midway in Four Sets Tuesday

The IU Southeast volleyball team fell in four sets (25-23, 12-25, 19-25, 23-25) to Midway on Tuesday.

The Grenadiers jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set after kills from Abigail Vogel and Ella Brooks. Another kill by Abigail Vogel followed by an ace by Lexi Striegel gave IU Southeast a 15-11 lead, which forced a Midway timeout.

Following the timeout, Midway went on a 4-1 run to cut the Grenadier lead to 16-15. IU Southeast took an 18-15 advantage, but a 5-1 run by Midway gave the Eagles a 20-19 lead. The Grenadiers responded with a 3-0 run to take a 22-20 lead and finished the set on an Ella Brooks kill to give IU Southeast a 25-23 victory.

Midway started the second set on a 10-3 run. Following an IU Southeast timeout, Midway extended their lead from 11-5 to 17-6. The Grenadiers were able to cut the lead to nine, but the blistering start from the Eagles was too much to overcome. Midway took the second set 25-12.

The third set saw a similar Midway start. The Eagles used a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead early in set three. After Midway took a 19-11 lead, the Grenadiers were able to cut the lead to three at 20-17. The Eagles answered with two quick points, and Midway went on to win the third set 25-19 and take a 2-1 match lead.

The Grenadiers used a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead early in the fourth set. With the Grenadiers leading 12-7, Midway went on a 7-1 run to take a 14-13 lead. The Grenadiers took the lead back after a kill from Kenzie Tingle and an attack error, but Midway responded with a 5-0 run to put the set back in favor of the Eagles 19-15.

A 3-0 run by the Grenadiers after a timeout cut the Midway lead to 19-18. Midway took a 21-19 advantage, but the Grenadiers went on another 3-0 run to swing the lead back in favor of IU Southeast 22-21. With the teams deadlocked at 23-23, two straight kills by Midway gave the Eagles a 25-23 fourth set victory and a 3-1 match victory.

Ella Brooks led the Grenadiers with 14 kills. Abigail Vogel added eight kills and Jessi Kramer had seven. Cate Murphy led IU Southeast with 18 assists, and Hannah Brown added 15. Averee Yoder finished with a team-high 23 digs. Lexi Striegel added 12 digs and Ella Brooks had 11. Lexi Striegel, Hannah Brown and Averee Yoder each had two aces for the Grenadiers.

IU Southeast (10-11, 6-6 RSC) travel to IU East on October 25th for an RSC conference matchup.
