Build employee engagement with feedback and recognition

Build employee engagement with feedback and recognition

Thank you to all staff employees who participated in action planning following the 2022 My Voice at IU Staff Engagement Survey. Your participation is vital in guiding unit-level change that enhances your work experience.

Survey results are also the basis for IU President Pamela Whitten and her cabinet’s efforts to ensure all Indiana University staff:

  • Have a clear understanding of the expectations of their role.
  • Receive regular feedback on their contributions.
  • Are given opportunities to learn and grow.
These three goals align directly with Gallup’s framework — the Gallup Q12 — which gives us a roadmap to improve IU’s work environment. As shared previously in IU Today, clear expectations set us all up for success. You can join an upcoming virtual session about why clear expectations matter to learn more about their importance.

Use the information and training opportunities below to learn about the second of IU’s university-wide goals: Ensuring staff employees receive regular feedback on their contributions. One proven way to do this is through recognition, as represented by Gallup’s Q4.

Gallup’s Q4: In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.

People who receive recognition or praise increase their productivity, boost engagement among their colleagues and are more likely to stay with their organization. Recognition helps employees understand the expectations of their role while seeing the value in their work.

For recognition to work, it must be:

  • Authentic: It feels genuine.
  • Meaningful: It highlights the value of the work and the person doing it.
  • Motivating: It taps into what matters most to the individual receiving it.
Everyone can share feedback and a help create a recognition-rich workplace. Start by prioritizing thanking a colleague and sharing how their work was meaningful to you. When you see excellent or impactful work, say something immediately. Recognition is a valuable and underutilized tool for enhancing performance, building connections and improving overall well-being.
