Go Bloomington Launch Event at Showers Plaza Celebrates Mobility and Sustainability

Tuesday afternoon at Showers Plaza in front of City Hall, residents gathered to learn about and celebrate the launch of Go Bloomington, a program that supports mobility options that are alternatives to single occupancy vehicles with the goals of reducing carbon emissions, calming traffic congestion, and improving parking availability.

“The City is committed to strategies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to local climate impacts, and mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Deputy Mayor Don Griffin. “Go Bloomington’s focus on reducing single occupant vehicles in order to reduce carbon emissions, decrease traffic, and optimize the parking that is available - reducing trips around the block looking for parking - supports this important commitment to our future.”

Residents can learn more about Go Bloomington, connect with people interested in carpooling, and find other transportation alternatives that meet their needs and make a positive impact on the environment at gobloomington.org. The website provides a layered map that allows users to access Bloomington Transit and Indiana University Campus Bus routes with real-time bus locations. Map layers also show the shortest routes for walking, biking, or where e-bikes and e-scooters are located.

During the launch event, people gathered in the plaza to see a Bloomington Transit bus, demonstrations of the new Lime e-bikes available for rent around the city, and the opportunity to try out Veo sit-down scooters. Commute with Enterprise brought a vanpool vehicle. These all increase mobility choices for trips of varying distances.

Jeff Jackson, Transportation Demand Manager, spoke first and was followed by Deputy Mayor Don Griffin and City Council President Susan Sandberg, both of whom offered remarks in support of Go Bloomington. Grant Echols from Catalent, an employer participating in the program also spoke. Kirk White, Vice Provost for External Relations-Bloomington, and Mary Ann Valenta, Regional Director, Strategic Integration at IU Health Bloomington also attended.

"Go Bloomington represents a significant commitment from the City of Bloomington to support sustainable transportation alternatives for the residents of our community," said Transportation Demand Manager Jeff Jackson. “This launch ushers in a new era of increased mobility options and the reduced carbon emissions that accompany these options.”

The City completed its Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Plan in 2020 and hired its first Transportation Demand Manager in November of 2021.
