NO. 18 Grenadiers Rout Bearcats to Sweep RSC Series

169

Indiana University Southeast Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

NO. 18 GRENADIERS ROUT BEARCATS TO SWEEP RSC SERIES

The IU Southeast bats stayed hot to take down Brescia 15-2 Friday afternoon to sweep the River States Conference series.

Things got going in the second inning as Ben Berenda and Brandon Boxer hit back to back singles. Freshman Blake Cook  drove them both in with a home run to deep right-center. That was Cook's first collegiate home run as he also made his first start in a Grenadier uniform. The grenadiers would score three runs on three hits in the inning.

The Bearcats would waste no time as Cameron Dean and Jacob Upshaw drove in a run a piece to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third. However, that would be the end of the offense for Brescia.

The Grenadiers would score in the next three innings starting with a single from Trevor Campbell. Brody Tanksley would draw a walk and Derek Wagner would be hit by a pitch to load the bases for IU Southeast. Wyatt Griskey would walk both Berenda and Boxer to give the Grenadiers two more runs. Blake Cook was not finished for the afternoon as he promptly unloaded the bases with a double in the right-center gap. That would give him six RBIs for the day.

Tanksley would add a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to give IU Southeast a 9-2 lead.

Things would break wide open in the fifth. Boxer led off the inning with a walk. Cook singled for his third hit in as many at bats. Trevor MacDonald doubled down the left field line to score Boxer, but the bearcats defense would get sloppy with the baseball and throw it away twice for both Cook and MacDonald to score on the play. Clay Woeste was hit by the pitch before Brayden Hazelwood would single to left and advance to second on the throw in. Tanksley would drive both runners in with a single to left. He advanced to third on error and then a single by Wagner before Berenda would drive him in. The score after five inning was the eventual final 15-2 Grenadiers.

Hunter Kloke got the win with a strong five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, one walk, and struck out six. Tyler Yotkewich and Cade Reynolds each threw a scoreless frame to finish this one off for the Grenadiers.

IU Southeast moves to 3-0 in RSC play. The Grenadiers will host Indiana Tech on Tuesday for a double-header scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
