Various cultures have used the mask over time to share stories and beliefs. Whether used for ceremonies, entertainment, dramatic performances, or protection, the ‘false face’ or face adornment allows storytelling to extend beyond language. This mini-exhibit gives a brief overview of mask usage and creation, ranging from a Chinese Lunar New Year mask and 1950’s snapshots documenting Halloween traditions to recent pieces referencing comics, vintage hobo imagery, and Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling.
