Indiana University Public Safety announced on April 20 that it is working with university and community partners to prepare for the upcoming Little 500 bicycle races, scheduled for April 24 and 25. The event is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the campus, increasing activity among pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and scooters.
The annual Little 500 weekend brings a large number of people together for various activities. IU Public Safety said its goal is to keep everyone safe by coordinating with groups such as the Bloomington Fire Department, IU Student Foundation, Office of Student Life, University Communications and Marketing, and Intra Collegiate Emergency Medical Service.
“Safety is always top of mind for us, but the public also plays a key part in ensuring we’re all safe,” said Hannah Cornett, public information officer for IU Public Safety. “Being prepared and informed, and watching out for one another, will help us all enjoy the weekend.” Cornett said testing emergency plans against different scenarios helps responders be ready when needed. “We encourage everyone to think ahead about safety and practice their plans too,” she said.
To get ready for the event, officials held a tabletop exercise simulating an emergency situation during race weekend. This was one of several exercises designed to strengthen response capabilities throughout the year.
Public safety tips shared include staying connected with friends or family members during events; keeping cell phones charged; opting in to receive safety text messages by texting “SafeIU” to 77295; checking weather forecasts before arrival; remaining aware while attending campus events; planning safe transportation home; slowing down on roads crowded with pedestrians or cyclists; avoiding texting while driving or driving under the influence; and reporting suspicious activity by calling or texting 911 or submitting reports online.
